The evening affirmed the Foundation’s mission and, through the generosity of those present, raised significant support for the work ahead. It was also the moment when the first phase of the Made for Greatness campaign was formally introduced, along with the encouraging news that we have already reached $200,000 toward our Phase 1 goal of $600,000. Board Member Will Hodges framed this moment well—what we are seeing now is not a finish line, but the visible emergence of something long in the making. We look forward to sharing more as this unfolds in the months ahead.

That same evening, guests were invited to explore a new public expression of the Foundation’s Principled Decision-Making framework, in the form of an AI tool. What has been formed in recent years as a framework, taught and practiced in classrooms and conversations, is now taking a form that can be experienced and tested. We are excited to continue sharing this in the weeks ahead as it becomes more widely available.

Taken together, these moments point to a deeper truth. Over the past five years, the work of the Foundation has been formative by design. Like a potter shaping clay, much of this season has been about careful molding—refining a process, strengthening a program, and building a foundation capable of serving schools, students, and educators with integrity and clarity. The goal has never been speed, but faithfulness to the work entrusted to us.

As we move through this Advent season, we are reminded that preparation is not passive. It is purposeful. It requires patience, gratitude, and trust in what is being shaped, even when the final form is not yet fully revealed.

Our hope is that this same spirit accompanies all of us—not only in anticipation of our Lord’s coming, but in every effort we undertake. May we carry this posture of readiness into 2026, committed in our own lives and through the Foundation’s work to fulfill our shared purpose: to manifest God’s Kingdom on Earth and to do His Will in the year ahead.

Photo: Board Chair Pierre Koshakji and Board Member Will Hodges with Jim Keyes, 2025 Authentic Leader Award Honoree

You are seeing what happens when the seed of faith, virtue, and leadership is planted in the fertile soil of a Catholic high school. Each student represents a return on investment—one that multiplies far beyond the individual.

At the Authentic Leadership Foundation, we call this our Campaign Towards Greatness. We speak of greatness not in the worldly sense of pride or power, but in the virtuous sense: clarity of purpose, courage of conviction, and strength to serve. Already, three Catholic high schools have engaged in this mission, and we are only beginning.

The impact of one transformed student can ripple across classrooms, families, parishes, and communities. Now imagine that impact multiplied hundreds—indeed, thousands—of times over across the nation. That is the vision we are working toward, and the reason your support on North Texas Giving Day 2025 matters so deeply.

Our plan is clear: within three years, the Authentic Leadership Foundation will achieve self-sufficiency, while ensuring that philanthropic support continues to expand access. This way, schools with fewer resources can still deploy ALF programs and bring this formation to their students. Your gift today is both immediate and enduring—it fuels transformation now, and secures it for the future.

And the time is right.
Across our nation and our world, a new awakening is stirring. Good is overcoming evil. Families are rediscovering their central role. And above all, hearts are turning back to God.

This is what your investment yields: not just changed students, but a changed culture. A culture of leaders who know who they are, Whose they are, and why they are here.

Their example is proof that greatness starts within. Join us at Rise to Greatness 2025 and witness it firsthand.

As we have shared in a previous Weekly TRUTH, Michelangelo once said of his iconic sculpture David, “He was always there in the marble—I just took away everything that wasn’t David.”

That quote has guided much of our thinking at the Authentic Leadership Foundation. It speaks to the essence of what leadership truly is: not something imposed from outside, but something revealed from within.

Each of us is born with a unique design. The journey to become an authentic leader begins by chipping away at everything that isn’t you—by discovering your temperament, seeking self-awareness, and learning to lead from the inside out.

But here’s the paradox (as we have also previously addressed): just when we think we’re “almost there,” the goalpost moves. Personal growth is like chasing the horizon—every step forward reveals more distance yet to travel. And yet we keep walking. Not because we expect perfection in this life, but because we know greatness isn’t a final destination—it’s a daily pursuit. And that pursuit, when rooted in virtue, points us (and hopefully all those whom we encounter) toward the ultimate goal: Heaven.

As adults, these are lessons we must relearn each day. But more importantly, we must also teach our kids.

Today, young people are navigating more confusion than ever. Identity, purpose, truth—it’s all up for grabs in a culture that too often rewards the loudest voice over the clearest conscience. That’s why we are proud to introduce something extraordinary this year at Rise to Greatness 2025: The Inaugural High School Authentic Leader Award.

This new honor will be presented to one young man and one young woman who exemplify what authentic leadership looks like in real life—not because of popularity or position, but because of how they lead: with integrity, courage, and service to others. These students stand out not just for what they’ve done, but for who they are becoming:

They’ve started to uncover their “David.”

They’re embracing the paradox.

They’re leading from the inside out.

Join us on Friday, June 13, 2025 (a very full day for ALF), to witness it firsthand. See what greatness really looks like in the next generation—and why it gives us so much hope.

The image you see is a rendition of a famous, possibly mythical, ad from explorer Ernest Shackleton. It sought men for a hazardous Antarctic journey, offering 'small wages, bitter cold, and constant danger.' While the ad's authenticity remains uncertain, its message symbolizes authentic leadership—honesty, resilience, and the pursuit of greatness. This parallels what may be the most successful 'sales pitch' in history, when Christ said, "Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Me."

The image you see here is one of many renditions of an iconic (and possibly apocryphal) advertisement attributed to Sir Ernest Shackleton, a British explorer best known for his expeditions to Antarctica. The ad, so the story goes, was placed in London newspapers in the early 1900s, prior to Shackleton’s famous Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–1917).

For clarity, the text reads:

“MEN WANTED for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success.”

Because there is no definitive proof that Shackleton actually placed this ad, many historians believe the story might be more myth than fact. However, it has become an iconic piece of adventure lore, symbolizing the extreme, HISTORICALLY FACTUAL challenges Shackleton and his crew faced.

Shackleton’s expedition, famous for its near disaster, as his ship, aptly called Endurance, became trapped in ice, eventually sinking. Despite the harsh conditions and the monumental struggle for survival, Shackleton and his crew managed to return safely, cementing his legacy as a leader of extraordinary courage and perseverance (In early 2022 the wreck of Endurance was found in the Weddell Sea, 10,000 feet down. It remains a protected historical site under the Antarctic Treaty.).

History aside, let’s assume for a moment that the ad is real. What might compel Shackleton, clearly in need of a crew, to compose such a sales pitch? Clearly, he was seeking individuals of a certain sort. He knew he needed a crew that would face truth, had strong character, and would do what it took to help execute the mission at hand.

Why was Shackleton flooded with applicants? It was an opportunity to achieve life fulfillment or authentic leadership. Discovering your path to greatness results in a full life.

Like Shackleton, the Authentic Leadership Foundation is clearly in need of a crew.

While Shackleton’s ad described the physical challenges to expect, below are the personal growth challenges to expect today, to achieve authentic leadership for ourselves, educators, students, and young adults. In all cases, the reward is a full life.

In several important ways, Shackleton’s ad serves as a profound metaphor for authentic leadership, especially in terms of the qualities required to lead in difficult and uncertain times. For example:

It’s Brutally Honest and Transparent. No sugarcoating here on what people are signing up for. Instead of making false promises or minimizing the risks, it lays out the stark truth; to paraphrase: “You may not return, but if you do, it will be to Glory (in a virtuous sense).” Don’t you wish most leaders were this transparent? Indeed, from a marketing standpoint, it may not generate many leads, but it would attract those who knew exactly what they were signing up for, fostering a team that could trust their leader because he was honest from the beginning.

It Sets Realistic Expectations. I often remind myself: Stress is the deficit between expectations and reality. Authentic leaders don’t create false hopes; they prepare their teams for the challenges ahead, allowing them to enter with clear expectations. By highlighting the potential risks and difficulties in the ad, Shackleton would have filtered out anyone who wasn’t ready for the hardships, ensuring that only committed individuals, who understood how achieving the expedition’s mission helped them with their own—those who could handle adversity—would enlist.

It’s about Greatness. While it lays out grim conditions, it also offers the potential for great reward. This taps into something bigger than the material… personal fulfillment, legacy, and the satisfaction of having accomplished something great. Authentic leaders often inspire through a shared mission appealing to people’s deeper motivations, like contributing to a mission that’s bigger than their own. An authentic leader doesn’t fear failure, but the good they could’ve done and didn’t….

It Demands Self-Awareness. Shackleton’s willingness to call for such a bold endeavor (even though it doesn’t specify the journey’s destination) reflects not just his courage (virtue), but also his self-awareness of the challenges (truth) of what lies ahead. Further, it expects nothing less of anyone who signs up.

It Makes for a Resilient Team. This copy was written to attract individuals who were not just physically tough, but mentally and emotionally resilient (principled in their decision-making and mature in their virtue). Authentic leadership requires assembling a team that is both skilled and aligned with the leader’s principles and virtue —here, those who could endure danger and hardship, yet still strive for greatness. In practice, such leaders build teams capable of facing adversity without losing their sense of mission.

It Makes No Promises. Authentic leaders know that the future holds many unknowns, yet they remain steady and optimistic even when the outcome is far from certain. Shackleton’s expedition itself, though fraught with peril, ended in survival and success in a different way than originally planned. Leading through uncertainty with confidence, and most significantly, flexibility, as Shackleton apparently did, is a hallmark of authentic leadership.

So, why bring this up? And why might I refer to it as “The Worst, and Most Successful Sales Pitch in History?” The truth is, I am not, especially due to the reality that this ad has never actually been proven to be run. Indeed, the image we share is only one of many variations out there. For our point – it doesn’t matter. It still represents an ideal that GREATNESS surely requires.

So what is the worst, and most successful, “sales pitch” in history?

“…If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.”
– Matthew 16:24 (NASB)

From what I know of marketing, I would never have signed off on that.

But then again, what do I really know? Clearly, while this “pitch” is pithier than our fabled Shackleton ad, there is little question to its validity, thanks to manuscript attestation. Beyond brevity are some other key differences, the first of which is its obvious success: more than 2,000 years later, the Christian faith claims billions of believers.

A second, perhaps most significant, key difference is this: while Shackleton could not promise a safe return, or even survival, Christ literally takes it all the way Home: “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:25 NASB)

The only caveat I will add to this last point is the “promise” of Greatness – and indeed that is what God calls us to be, on a path He has laid out for each of us.

This is most significant for young people: their restless hearts are not satisfied by comfort, because that is not what God intends.

What does God intend? He has made each one of us, and each one of our youth, for Greatness.

And it is incumbent upon our generation to help today’s youth discover this path. Will you join us?

I recently had coffee with a friend who has cancer, and is in need of a miracle.

So, here’s a question that resulted from our discussion: What would you do if you had 60 years to live? Six years? Six months? Six weeks? Six days?

Speaking for myself: what I would do is based on an integrated approach to life.

Integrity or ‘integritas’ in Latin, means ‘whole or wholeness’ and is the root of the word ‘integrated’.

How do you achieve wholeness? We invite you to check out the page IntegratedLife.network. This example of the activities to practice to grow in each part of your life, to achieve wholeness, is how I and others do it, but there are other activities you can do. This page also offers you a one-page downloadable tool to get you started (no opt-in required).

So, what does applying your whole self day-to-day, or leading an integrated life look like? How do you start? Scheduling your calendar in this order:

Getting right with God (spiritual) – spending time on our relationship with God everyday is added to your calendar first.

Getting ourselves right (personal) – making principled decisions every day, every hour, every minute, because we are the sum of our decisions – for example, after God, a principled decision is spending time on our relationships with family, and is added to your calendar next.

Getting our work right (professional) – in my friend’s example, spending time on our cancer treatment options – personal, and our business activities with any time remaining.

This is an integrated approach to life and death IDEAL, but it’s also very practical!

I’m sure you notice that ‘getting work right’ is at the top of the integrated life process visual. This does not mean we advocate putting work before God. However, in my experience, while not ideal, this part of our life usually remains top-of-mind (admittedly, it did for me). Moving clockwise, getting right with God follows (however you will notice we recommend it as the first priority of each day). Continuing clockwise, the ‘missing part’ to practice an integrated life is usually getting ourselves right through personal growth.

Ironically, the principles, virtues, as well as our mission used in personal growth are imprinted on our hearts already. Practicing personal growth through principled decision-making draws them out and combines them with our knowledge & experience for greater results.

We all have a life-threatening condition – mortality, but by adding the practice of personal growth, we can take an integrated approach to life, not just death, today–that’s rightly ordered.

I would like to publicly thank my friend for the inspiration to write this post and to honor him. He never settles for comfort, because he knows we’re all made for greatness. I will close simply with the questions from earlier:

What would you do if you had 60 years to live? Six years? Six months? Six weeks? Six days?

Explore your answers at IntegratedLife.network.

For those of you familiar with the famous quote of Pope Benedict XVI, you’ll quickly know his answer to this question. I find the question admittedly challenging, unbending and inconvenient.

And yet, over the years I have become grateful for it.

Once you hear it, or in this case read it, you can’t “unlearn” it. This question has a way staying in your head, hopefully keeping you accountable for being your best…ALL THE TIME.

Annoying, right? Well, let’s take a closer look.

First of all, what is comfort? There are a couple ways to define it, depending on context. Comfort is the feeling of ease, security, and relaxation, often arising from familiar surroundings, supportive relationships (real or perceptively), or a sense of physical contentment. It’s also a state of minimal stress, and perhaps approaching problems the way you’ve always done it, using your knowledge, experience and emotion. It often also leads to minimal effort.

Next, what is greatness? Greatness combines the above approach to problems and situations, with principles and virtues that results in doing what’s possible. It’s putting in the work to actively build character strength to sustain an ever-increasing level of achievement and effectiveness.

Greatness is continuous pursuit of knowing yourself better and creating solutions that help you with your mission, rather than hindering it.

The result is personal coupled with spiritual and professional growth to achieve an integrated life, or greatness.

The difference between comfort and greatness is palpable, isn’t it?

And yet, here’s the irony: pursue greatness, and you will ultimately be fulfilled, and at peace (true comfort). Make comfort your priority, and it is very likely that your heart will remain empty, and forever restless.

We have all seen the exponential increase of what I will call shades of grey, in popular culture, as well as public policy and the media. This is, to put it mildly, political correctness on a massive steroid binge. The gentle pushback one may hear, when confronted with a seemingly complicated moral dilemma, will be that the answer is not easy to resolve; that it falls in a “grey area.” But I will put forth that this rationale, this “grey area myth,” is just what opens the door to the dangers of relativism. Indeed it fosters confusion and excuses for behavior that drifts away from clear principles. One approach to combatting this, especially when engaging impressionable young people, is to ask ourselves some simple, yet profound, binary questions:

Am I a problem, or am I a solution?

Am I a taker, or am I a giver?

Am I a liability, or am I an asset?

Am I a consumer, or am I a producer?

These questions, while seemingly simplistic, cut through the fog of relativism. Few of us will align perfectly on one side, but acknowledging this eternal “tug of war” can be powerful. Gauging inwardly and honestly where we stand allows us to progress toward Greatness. If we find ourselves leaning towards the negative, it’s a wake-up call to change our trajectory.

Endeavoring daily to reach perfection on the side of light is not about achieving a seemingly unattainable ideal, but about shielding ourselves from the demonic lie of relativism. The history of the Saints shows us that this ideal is indeed attainable, albeit far from easy. While most of us may never be declared Saints, we should never take our eyes off that goal (manifested in our earthly lives by Greatness). By constantly aiming to be solutions-oriented, generous, and productive, we create a clear, positive direction for our lives. We become magnanimous.

In striving for this clarity, we reject the grey area’s comfort and embrace the challenge of self-improvement. The more we align with principles of light, the less room we leave for excuses and mediocrity. By doing so, we strengthen our integrity and, hopefully, eventually leave this world in a better state than it was when we were born into it.

And as we clear the fog, we also learn that so-called “moral dilemmas,” while real, are far less common than we are all-too-often led to believe.
