Every decision model has a blind spot. Most of them share the same one.Truth: Financial, legal, AI, and political decision models all have the same blind spot: they can't see dignity. A CFO I respect once told me: "If I can't measure it, I can't manage it." I nodded, because it sounded smart. It took me two years to realize what was missing. His daughter had just started her first job. Entry level. Low pay. Long hours. She called him one Sunday frustrated, feeling invisible. And this man — brilliant with numbers, fluent in dashboards — had nothing in his toolkit for the question she was really asking: Do I matter here? He could measure retention. He could measure engagement scores. He could not measure dignity. That's the blind spot. We have extraordinary tools for making decisions. Financial models that forecast seven years out. Legal frameworks that manage liability down to the clause. AI systems that optimize supply chains across continents. Political calculus that reads a room in real time. Every one of these tools does something well. And every one of them shares the same limitation: they cannot see the person. The financial model sees a cost center. The legal framework sees a liability. The AI sees a data point. The political calculation sees a vote. None of them sees a who. This isn't an argument against metrics. Measure everything you can. But know what your measurements miss. The most important variable in every human decision — the dignity of the people involved — doesn't fit in a cell on a spreadsheet. That's not a flaw in the tools. It's a feature of the question. Some things that are absolutely real are not measurable. And some things that are perfectly measurable are not important. The leaders I admire most have learned to hold both: the rigor of good data and the humility to know where the data runs out. This week: Look at the next decision on your desk. What does the data tell you to do? Now ask: What can't the data see? Sit with both answers before you choose.
